Woking Borough Council

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Revenues Team, which is responsible for the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax and Business Rates. The majority of duties for this particular role relate to Council Tax.

Salary is based on experience. With no previous Council Tax experience, the starting salary will usually fall within the W1 pay grade (between £17,364 and £21,685) plus flexible benefit allowance of up to £1,400.

Comprehensive training will be provided, which includes everything needed to elevate you to the W2 pay grade after your first six months. You can quickly progress from then on as your experience and performance increases.

This job is also open to those who already have Council Tax experience. A competitive salary, which recognises this, will be offered to experienced Officers.

Whatever your level of experience, you will be given the chance to pursue a professional qualification, funded by the Council, should you wish to.

The successful applicant will be customer focused, empathetic but assertive and confident in communicating both verbally and in writing, in order to deliver successful outcomes for customers and for the Council.

You will support the Customer Service team by providing advice and support for Council Tax and Business Rates queries. You will also help to maintain our records so that we can issue bills promptly and accurately. This will include:

  • Setting up new accounts and closing old accounts
  • Granting exemptions and discounts
  • Taking payments
  • Answering both written and verbal enquiries
  • Assisting in activities relating to the billing and collection of Council Tax and Business Rates

You will also be flexible and adaptable, and possess the ability to learn complex legislation.

The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for this post.  An assessment may be required. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this further, please contact the Human Resources team.

In return the Council offers a generous flexi time scheme with the ability to take two flexi days a month, membership of the local government pension scheme, discounted health and leisure membership, plus many more excellent benefits.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Terry Stocks (Revenues Team Manager) on 01483 74 3231 or Rachel Evans (Senior Revenues Officer) on 01483 74 3237.

Interviews will take place on Thursday 7th November 2019.
